Advanced training for service on ships subject to the IGF Code

The Advanced Training for service on ships subject to the IGF Code (IGF-A) course is for masters, engineers and all personnel directly responsible for the care and use of fuels and fuel systems on ships subject to the IGF Code.The regulations are detailed in STCW Convention V/3 and STCW Code A-V/3-2 and the course is in accordance with Model Course 7.14

This three-day advanced training programme provides participants with the knowledge and skills required to safely perform and supervise fuel-related operations on board ships subject to the IGF Code.

During the course, participants develop an in-depth understanding of the fuels used on board, propulsion plants and associated systems. The programme also covers the safe execution and monitoring of fuel-related duties, bunkering operations, fuel storage, pollution prevention, legal requirements, hazard prevention, occupational health and safety, and fire prevention and firefighting systems.

The programme covers the following topics:

1. Familiarity with the fuels used on board ships subject to the IGF Code.
2. Knowledge of the propulsion plant and associated systems.
3. Safe execution and monitoring of all duties related to fuels on board.
4. Planning and monitoring bunkering operations and the storage of fuels.
5. Taking precautionary measures to prevent pollution caused by fuels used on board.
6. Knowledge of the applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
7. Taking precautionary measures to prevent hazards on board.
8. Applying occupational health and safety precautions.
9. Knowledge of fire prevention, fire control and the operation of firefighting and fire-extinguishing systems on board.

After completing the course, the student will have knowledge of:

1. Characteristics of low-flashpoint fuels;
2. Physical and chemical aspects of low-flashpoint fuels;
3. International legislation and guidelines;
4. Safe working practices with low-flashpoint fuel equipment;
5. Technical aspects related to low-flashpoint fueled engines;
6. Bunkering procedures;
7. Maintenance and checks of the low-flashpoint fuel installation;
8. Emergency procedures;
9. Fire prevention and fire-fighting training.
