The course Bridge Resource Management (BRM) has the objective of optimizing the knowledge and skills of leadership and teamwork at operational and management level on board of seagoing ships. A bridge team needs to possess this insight and these skills in order to guarantee a safe and efficient passage in areas of high density traffic such as the entry and exit canals towards ports and passages of ‘congested areas’.
The course is developed in accordance with the dispositions in section A-II/1 and A-II/2 of the Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended. The course has been accredited by DNV-GL.
During the three-day course Bridge Resource Management (BRM) you tackle realistic situations on our Full Mission Bridge simulators. These exercises are an ideal complement to the required theoretical knowledge.
The following learning objectives play a part during this course:
you have the knowledge and the capacity to apply effective resource management:
- allocation, designation and prioritization of means
- effective communication on board and onshore
- decisions taken are in correspondence with the experience of the team
- assertiveness and leadership, including motivation
- obtaining and keeping of situational awareness
you have practical knowledge of personnel management and educational roadmaps
you have knowledge of related international maritime conventions and recommendations and national legislation
you have the capacity of applying workload management, including:
- planning and coordination
- task distribution amongst all personnel
- limitations of time and means
- prioritization
you have the knowledge and the capacity to apply decision making techniques:
- situation and risk assessment
- identification and consideration of generated options
- selecting of work procedure
- evaluation of the effectiveness
At the end of this course:
- you have developed a positive standing regarding safety and collaboration
- you understand the importance of operating procedures
- you are better capable to collaborate on board
- you are able to elaborate a short and concise passage plan
- your management skills have been strengthened
- you have optimized your skills in terms of safety
You are a navigation officer working on the bridge of a seagoing ship or you are following education to become navigation officer, for example pilot, master, navigation officer or student after completing your internship at sea. You are working in the maritime sector and are due to your activities and involvement part of an operational bridge room team.

If you would like to attend this course, you need to be familiarized with the activities on board. This experience is necessary in order to understand that leadership and teamwork are essential components at operational level.
