  • Dynamic Positioning (DP) is a computer system to keep the vessel in position and on heading by means of the proper propellers and thrusters. Position reference systems, in combination with wind, motion and heading sensors, provide information to the computer. This is necessary to keep position and heading changes caused by external forces, such as wind and current, as small as possible.  The training scheme is a IMO requirement for personnel on DP vessels  under DP class.

During the first course (Phase A) Dynamic Positioning Induction (basic) you will learn general principles of Dynamic Positioning. The practical exercises that take place during this course will be done on a desktop Kongsberg simulator. The course is a combination of theory and hands-on practical exercises.

This course is part of the DP Operator training scheme of the Nautical Institute (NI). The entire course (theory, simulator scenarios, simulator and the instructors) is accredited by the Nautical Institute in London.

  • The theoretical component takes place in a classroom. The DP basic course will be completed by an online exam initiated by the Nautical Institute.

The following theoretical topics will be covered:

    • general principles of dynamic positioning
    • dynamic positioning applications
    • coordinate systems
    • sensors
    • position reference systems
    • thrusters and manoeuvre systems
    • dynamic positioning and tracking modes
    • follow-sub modus
    • power management systems
    • dynamic positioning operations
    • alarm systems
    • DP watch keep and watch transfer procedures
    • Documentation and communication
    • Rules and regulation
    • DP incidents
    • DP alarms

On the (individual) desktop DP simulator you will carry out exercises to begin to comprehend the system and its menu structure

  • At the end of this course:

    • you will possess the theoretic basic knowledge of Dynamic Positioning
    • you will possess the Dynamic Positioning Operator’s Logbook
    • you are able to commence with phase B of the DP Operators training scheme
  • Are you looking to qualify for the Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) certificate and you meet all entry level requirements (see entry requirements)? Than this is the right course for you!

  • Entry requirements
    • The minimum qualification is STCW Regulation II/1 – II/2 – II/3 deck and Regulation III/1 – III/2 – III/3 engine or III/6 ETO or a similar alternative that is evaluated individually by the Nautical Institute. The entry requirements can be found on the website of the Nautical Institute.
    • Furthermore a solid level of the English language is required to be able to attend the course.
